7 QUESTIONS WITH BUTCH WALKER

7 QUESTIONS WITH BUTCH WALKER

  1. Where’d it all start?

I started carrying a camera with me to break the boredom while walking young cattle from the southern end of our cattle station back to the house (about 20km). I really love showing people what we do out here.

  1. Favorite photo you’ve taken and why?

I took this after a long walk with some cows and calves, they were thirsty so I could get very close and show a different perspective. The cattle we run are Santa Gertrudis, originally from King Ranch, Texas. They have a very strong mothering and protection instinct and will take turns babysitting several calves while their mothers graze.

  1. Where do you want to shoot next?

I’d love to spend a couple of weeks in Monument Valley exploring with a supercub. Failing that, Western Australia is a very close second.

  1. Craziest moment you’ve had while shooting or traveling for a shoot?

A few times I’ve been too busy shooting in cattle yards with my eye to a camera and failed to see bulls fighting until they were very close, no injuries yet thankfully! I also had a few tense moments with a horse that suddenly decided it didn’t like my camera bag slung across my back in a canter and tried to get rid of me!

  1. Favorite photographer / artistic inspiration?

Mark Maggiori @markmaggiori - his work is incredible
Matthew Abbott @mattabbottphoto - Ana amazing Aussie photojournalist
Tony Hewitt @tony.hewitt - fine art aerials, he has some amazing abstracts of Western Australia.
Guy Havell @guy_havell - his recent series “back roads of Americana” is, to me, proof that film still beats digital for certain applications.

  1. Favorite book, TV show, or movie from the past year?

A short history of nearly everything - Bill Bryson

  1. Last meal on earth? (food, setting, people, etc.)

Mutton Chops, mashed potatoes and peas with my wife and family.
